ABOUT THE GATHERING
The evening featured compositions spanning nearly eight decades, from Reb Benzion’s first melody, written in 1941 at age sixteen, to works from his final years. With more than 400 original compositions, including beloved classics such as Eishes Chayil and Mizmor L’Dovid, his music has become an enduring part of Jewish life throughout the world.
R’ Aaron Moshe Orlander, a longtime student of Reb Benzion and an authority on Modzitzer music, hosted and led the singing alongside R’ Duvid Bick.
Joining them was Dr. Gordon Dale, an ethnomusicologist and author of A Life in Music: Ben Zion Shenker and Hasidic Song in America, a major biography documenting the composer's life and musical legacy. Dov Lenchevsky accompanied on piano, bringing expressive improvisation and rich musical arrangements to the melodies.
Reb Benzion’s recordings, his founding of Neginah Records in 1956, and his lifelong dedication to Chassidic music helped preserve and transmit a treasured musical heritage to generations around the world.
More than a musical gathering, this Melave Malka was a tribute to a beloved composer, teacher, and friend whose melodies continue to inspire and uplift generations.
Presented on ACHIM.
