๐ฒ Traditional Hungarian โGefilte Kroitโ (Stuffed Cabbage)
๐ Ingredients:
The Meat Filling:
โข 1 kg Ground Beef
โข ยพ cup White Rice (Uncooked)
โข 1 large Onion (Grated or finely chopped)
โข 1 Egg
โข 2 tsp Salt ๐ง
โข 1 tsp Black Pepper
โข 1 tsp Garlic Powder
The Sweet & Sour Sauce:
โข 600 mL Tomato Paste (Concentrate)
โข 4 cups Water ๐ง
โข 1/3 cup White Sugar (or brown sugar)
โข ยผ cup Fresh Lemon Juice
โข 2 tsp Salt ๐ง
The Cabbage:
โข 1 Large Green Cabbage (Pro tip: Freeze it 2 days before, then thaw to skip the boiling!)
๐ฉโ๐ณ Method:
1๏ธโฃ Prep the Cabbage: Peel the softened leaves carefully so they donโt tear.
2๏ธโฃ The Filling: Mix the beef, rice, onion, egg, and spices. Gently roll about 2 tbsp of meat into each cabbage leaf. Seal it as shown in the video.
3๏ธโฃ The Sauce: Whisk the tomato paste, water, sugar, salt, and lemon until smooth. It should be a perfect sweet-and-tangy balance!
4๏ธโฃ Pack the rolls in seam-side down. Pour the sauce over the top.
5๏ธโฃ The Slow Cook: Simmer on very low heat for 3 – 12 hours.
โ ๏ธ Chefโs Note: Keep an eye on the pot! If you see the sauce getting too thick while cooking, add a little bit of water gradually to keep the rolls moist and help the rice cook through.#
