חז״ל מלמדים, ורש״י על התורה (ע״פ המדרש, תורת כהנים) מבאר, שנגעי בתים לא היו רק עונש, אלא גם לטובה.
הכנענים היו מטמינים אוצרות בקירות בתיהם, ועל ידי ניתוץ הקירות בעקבות הנגעים — זכו בני ישראל לגלות את האוצרות הללו.
