What happens when a visibly Jewish traveler walks through one of the most mysterious places in the Middle East?

In this episode of Level Up Road Trips, I travel from Egypt deep into Yemen searching for the forgotten history of Yemen’s Jewish communities. What started as a historical exploration quickly turned into one of the most intense and unpredictable trips I have ever experienced.

From landing in Cairo to arriving in Seiyun, I begin exploring ancient cities that once had vibrant Jewish life. I visit the incredible mud-brick skyline of Shibam, often called the “Manhattan of the Desert,” and walk through the historic streets of Seiyun and Tarim.

But the trip takes a dramatic turn.

Walking through Yemen with my visible Jewish look suddenly starts attracting attention. Tension builds, questions start coming, and the situation slowly becomes more complicated than I expected.

Along the way you’ll also see unique parts of Yemeni culture, including the surprising obsession locals have with ibex, historic landmarks like the grave of Abu Bakr Salem, and the atmosphere of cities that most travelers will never see.

This was one of the most challenging trips I have ever taken, but it allowed me to document a place that very few people in the world ever get to see, especially through the eyes of a Jewish traveler.
